About

After a brief but successful career as a textile designer, Alan had a long hiatus away from the world of art and design before returning in earnest in 2014.

Alan creates silent poetry in his dreamlike, meditative paintings, with a hidden narrative or message to uncover. His mixed media approach involves water-based paints on paper and fabric, often rubbed with clear wax, then scraped back, or washed, to reveal the layers of colour beneath. Through a harmonious blend of colours and recurring motifs – moon, stars, flowers and leaves – there’s a lingering feeling of nostalgia combined with an abstracted sense of the surrounding landscape.

Linoprints of patterns designed by Alan, monoprinting and the use of metal leaf add to the decorative effect of the highly textural surfaces.

Creating artwork evocative of worn and weathered surfaces, far flung locations and ancient artefacts that invite the viewer's own interpretation.
